Choose white noise when outside sounds, a snoring partner, or a noisy building is the main problem. Its steady broadband sound can make interruptions less noticeable by reducing the contrast between background silence and sudden noise.

Choose binaural beats when your mind feels busy at bedtime and you prefer a tonal, rhythmic listening experience. A delta beat such as 2 Hz is commonly used in sleep soundtracks, but it is not a guaranteed sleep treatment and it will not work for everyone.

You can also combine them at a low volume: use a sleep-range binaural beat as the gentle center of the soundscape and add a quiet rain, ocean, or soft stream layer for masking. The goal is comfort, not maximum loudness.

Start quietly and judge the result by how rested you feel the next morning, not by how intense the audio seems at bedtime.

A Simple Experiment for Tonight

Try each option for two nights at a comfortable, low volume. On the first two nights, use only steady masking sound such as rain, ocean, or white-noise-like audio. On the next two nights, use a gentle 2 Hz sleep tone with stereo headphones. Keep your bedtime and room conditions as similar as possible.

If both sounds are pleasant but your room is noisy, combine them: keep the binaural beat quieter than the ambient layer, or reverse that balance if the masking sound distracts you. In a layered mixer, each sound should be adjustable independently so the blend stays soft instead of becoming fatiguing.

Record three simple notes each morning: how long it seemed to take to fall asleep, how often you remember waking, and how refreshed you feel. A small personal trial is more useful than assuming a popular sound must be the right one for you.
